FRUIT TREES
We have in stock 30 varieties of apple tree
plus plums, pears, cherries, damsens, green gages, medlars,
quinces, mulberries, walnuts, hazel nuts, sweet chestnuts
and figs.
Trees as half standards, bush, fan and
espalier, minarette and patio.
Why grow your own
Fruit picked straight from a tree is
always going to taste far better than anything the
supermarkets can offer. To transport fruit over long
distances it has to be picked under ripe or it would bruise
and loose shelf life. Only fully ripe apples, pears and
especially plums will have the full flavour and sweetness.
Children may eat a wider range of healthy produce if they
are involved in growing food and understand where it comes
from as well as tasting fruit as it should be.
Value for money,
even the smallest garden can produce a worthwhile crop, one
small apple tree can produce 600 or more apples over its
lifetime for very little effort.
Space
With dwarfing
rootstocks and pruning apples, pears and cherries can be
grown in a very small space, 90cm across in a sunny spot is
enough, cordons and minarettes can be planted 60cm apart. At
around 2m high picking is easy. Apples, pears and even plums
can be shaped to best use the available space and to be
attractive blossom trees. Train trees on walls and fences or
grow as minarettes in containers. Apples and pears can make
excellent hedges, far more productive, planet friendly and
attractive than lap panels.
We grow a range
of larger trees, half standards, more difficult to find in
garden centres but ideal for planting in lawns so that you
can mow round them or for an orchard.
Help
Choosing fruit
trees can seem complicated and we are always pleased to help
and advise you with your choice and aftercare. If you need
delivery or planting arranged please ask.
We pot on
regularly and put straight out, fruit trees should not be
allowed to get pot bound. Freshly potted trees establish
well and crop better if planted well and supported.
If you would
like us to get varieties not on show please ask. We can get
most in but need to know in summer for autumn/winter
delivery. |
